KPSEA stands for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment. It is an assessment of Grade 6 pupils in Kenyan schools who are looking to join junior high school.
KPSEA was introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), replacing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
KCPE was an exam taken by pupils before joining secondary school under the 8-4-4 curriculum.

How pupils are assessed under KPSEA
The CBC introduced a new way of assessing pupils that does not rely on grades or marks achieved.[1]
Unlike KCPE, which assesses performance by adding the total marks a pupil got in each subject, KPSEA assesses performance by determining whether a pupil has achieved certain learning outcomes.
It determines whether a pupil has:
- Exceeded Expectations
- Meeting Expectations
- Approaching Expectations
- Below Expectations.
Because of this assessment strategy, KPSEA does not rank pupils based on the total marks achieved.
