Introduction
Kakamega County is located in Western Kenya and had a total population of 2,038,000 in 2024. In 2019, the county had a population of 1,867,579 living within a land area of 3,020 square kilometers. Kakamega had a population density of 618 people per square kilometer.
The total number of households in the region was 433,207, and the average household was 4.3 people.
Kakamega County is bordered to the North by Bungoma, to the North East by Trans Nzoia, to the East by Uasin Gishu and Nandi, to the South by Vihiga and Siaya, and to the South West by Busia.
Kakamega County has 13 sub-counties, including Butere, Kakamega Central, Kakamega East, Kakamega North, Kakamega South, Khwisero, Likuyani, Lugari, Matete, Matungu, Mumias East, Mumias West, and Navakholo.
Kakamega County Economy
Kakamega County had an average Gross County Product at current prices of Ksh 276.48 billion between 2018 and 2022, representing an average contribution to Gross Value Added of 2.3%.
The average Kakamega county contribution to agriculture, forestry, and fishing activities between 2018 and 2022 was 3.7%, while the average contribution to manufacturing activities in the same period was 1.8%. Kakamega County’s average contribution to services was 1.9%.

Marital Status
The percent distribution of never-married women aged 12 and above in Kakamega County was 38.7% in 2019. The share of those married monogamously was 47.2%, while 3.9% of the women were married polygamously. The percentage of widowed women in Kakamega was 7.8%. The county's divorced and separated were o.6% and 1.8%, respectively.
In men aged 12 and above, the % of those never married in Kakamega was 49.7% in 2019. Those who were married monogamously were 42.6%, while 3.5% were married polygamously. The share of widowed men in Kakamega was 1.2%, while those divorced and separated were 0.6% and 2.1%, respectively.
Results from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey in 2022 showed that the median age at first marriage among women aged 25-49 in Kakamega was 20.8 years. In men aged 30-54, the median age of first marriage was 26.3 years.

The percent distribution of married women aged 15-49 in 2022 who had a co-wife in Kakamega County was 8.3%, while those with more than two co-wives were 3.4%. The share that did not have a co-wife in the county was 82.2%.

Kakamega County Finance
In the financial year (FY) 2023/24, Kakamega County approved a supplementary budget of Ksh 16.79 billion, comprising Ksh 4.89 billion (29.1%) and Ksh 11.90 billion (70.9%) allocation for development and recurrent expenditures, respectively.
The budget estimates represented an increase of 3.6% compared to the previous year when it was Ksh 16.20 billion and comprised Ksh 4.63 billion for development and Ksh 11.34 billion for recurrent expenditures.
Kakamega County Revenue Performance
The main sources of revenue for Kakamega County in FY 2023/2024 included:

For recurrent expenditures, Kakamega County spent Ksh 7,082,912,639 on personnel emoluments and Ksh 3,973,549,017 on operations and maintenance. For development expenditures, Kakamega County spent Ksh 2,803,243,867.
The total expenditure in FY 2023/24 was Ksh 13,859,705,524.
