Gross County Product | County GDP

The Gross County Product (GCP) measures the value created through production by residents of a specific county in Kenya. The GCP is similar to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which tracks the value of goods and services produced within a country's borders at a specific time. The Gross County Product, therefore, sums up Kenya's total GDP in a specific year.[1]

Total GCP + Gross Value Added of extra-regional territory + taxes on products – subsidies = GDP

Gross County Product by county

In 2022, counties in Kenya that had the highest Gross County Product at current prices included Nairobi at Ksh 3,379.4 billion, Kiambu (Ksh 721.2 billion), Nakuru (Ksh 600.5 billion), Mombasa (Ksh 564.1 billion), Meru (Ksh 407.4 billion), and Machakos (Ksh 378.4 billion).[2]

Share of Gross County Product

Nairobi County's average contribution to Gross Value Added (GVA), representing its share of GCP, was 27.5%, followed by Kiambu at 5.7%, Nakuru at 4.9%, Mombasa at 4.9%, Meru at 3.3% and Machakos at 3.2%.[3]

Counties with high GCPs are relatively urban and participate in diverse economic activities. Nairobi dominates other counties in manufacturing and services, while Kiambu, Nakuru, and Meru have a mix of manufacturing and agricultural output

Counties contributing the least to the overall Gross County Product include Samburu, Isiolo, Tana River, and Lamu at 0.3%, Wajir at 0.5%, and Mandera at 0.5%. Lower attribution is attributed to their low agricultural output due to unfavourable weather conditions in the arid and semi-arid regions. These counties also have low manufacturing activities, leading to lower economic output.

The table below shows the GCP at current prices for all counties in 2022.
