Kenya: Access to Electricity by Constituency - Stats Kenya

Access to electricity is a household’s connectivity to sufficient electricity capable of providing a minimum amount of energy to power an essential bundle of services such as lighting several bulbs, charging a phone, and lighting a TV, radio, and fan.[1]

According to the World Bank, the share of the Kenyan population accessing electricity increased from 15.2% in 2000 to 76.5% in 2021.[2]

Electricity access in urban areas increased from 49.9% in 2000 to 97.5% in 2021. In rural areas, population access to electricity increased from 7.2% in 2010 to 68.2% in 2021.

Household access to electricity increased between 2009 and 2019.

Other than the World Bank, information about electricity access can be found in the 2009 and 2019 censuses. In 2009, household access to electricity in Kenya was 14.3%, which increased to 38.7% in 2019.[3]

The map below shows household access to electricity in 2019 by county.

Access to electricity was highest in Nairobi at 96.7%, followed by Kiambu at 91.9%. Counties with the lowest household access to electricity were Turkana at 8.8%, West Pokot at 11.9%, and Samburu and Wajir at 14.6%.

Electricity access increased, but massive disparities persist within counties.

The map above shows household access to electricity by county, suggesting that every area within a county has equal access. However, massive disparities exist when we break down electricity access by constituency.

The map below shows the percentage distribution of household access to electricity in Kenya by constituency. Within counties, some constituencies have lower access to electricity than others.
